Welcome to the Baldwin County Martin Luther King Community, where we strive for unity, equality, and justice for all. Our mission is to empower individuals and communities through education and advocacy in the pursuit of civil rights, including voting rights and the right to participate fully in our democracy.

History

In 1986, Mr. Willie Williams saw a need to commemorate and celebrate the works and dreams of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Mr. Willie Williams, and Mrs. Arcola King went before the Mayor and City Council of Daphne, Alabama, for permission. At that time, the city of Daphne was unwilling to permit a March in honor of Dr. King in 1986.
The following year, 1987, Mr. Willie Williams and Mrs. Eartha Martin obtained permission from the city leaders to have a Commemorative march. The committee had a one-day celebration with a procession to Joe Louis Patrick Park in Daphnmont on Johnson Rd,  Daphne, Alabama. At that time, we had a short program following the march with local officials. The tribute committee in 1987 consisted of Mr. Willie Williams, Eartha Martin, Ms. Denise Williams, Ms. Natalyn Williams, Mr. & Mrs. Yancey Baldwin, Ms. Arcola King, Mr. John Lake, Mr. Kenneth Day, S.B, Williams and his Boys Scouts, Daphne Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi and Buffalo Rock Pepsi-Cola.
In 1988. We marched from Lott Park in Daphne, Alabama, to Joe Louis Patrick Park in Daphnmont. The committee was still under the leadership of Mr. Willie Williams.
In 1989, the  Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Committee extended the one-day celebration to another. A Sunday evening program was added. The first evening program was held at Antioch Missionary Baptist Church in Point Clear, Alabama. The Keynote Speaker was the late Pastor A.L. Whitfield of Antioch Baptist Church. That Monday, we marched from Daphne Intermediate School on Main St in Daphne, Al, to Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, where the Keynote Speaker was Mr. O.B. Purifoy, District Manager of Atlanta Life Insurance, the second largest black insurance company in the United States.
By this time, we had increased our participants: Alabama New South Coalition; Baldwin County Young Republican Club; American Legion Post 335; National Organization of Women; residents of Bay Minette; Eastern Shore Peace Network and Alabama Democratic Conference,
In the 1990s & 2000 s, The Baldwin County Celebration Committee extends to a three-day celebrations. The King celebrations continue to be a mainstay in Baldwin County with Speakers such as Alabama State Senators Hank Sanders, Senator Vivian Figures, Honorable Judge Herman Thomas, Mobile County Commissioner Sam Jones, Alabama State Representatives James Buskey, Representative Joseph Mitchell, Representative Yvonne Kennedy, Baldwin County Judge Charles Partin, Judge Pamela Baschap, Mobile City Councilman Pastor Clinton Johnson, Councilman Fred Richardson, Montgomery City Councilwomen Janet Thomas May,  Former U.S. surgeon General Dr. Regina Benjamin, Prichard City Council President Wayne Lafitte, Mr. Damon Wickware of Bayview Ford, and others.
The M.L. King Committee had decided to rotate the celebration to other Baldwin County Communities. The celebrations have occurred in Bay Minette, Foley, Point Clear, Fairhope, Spanish Fort, Montrose, and Daphne, Alabama. The committee has organized panel discussions on "Be the Best You Can Be" by Mr. Herman L. Williams, a Freshman at Morehouse College, Advantages of a Good Education, A Youth Perspective by Baldwin County School Board member James D. Williams, A challenge to be a Greater Generation by Mr. James C. Cox, Principal of Bay Minette Middle School, Democrat or Republican and Voting Rights Act Renew or Not.
The Baldwin Coulty Celebration Committee, Inc. has been involved in the fight for Voting Rights. The committee has lobbied and sued in federal court for convenient polling places in Baldwin County. The committee has supported job fairness, education, voter registration, community fair schools, and property rights. The committee wills always KEPT THE DREAM ALIVE.

Our Scholarship Application is open to all and is designed to help those who share our passion for learning and making a difference in the world. Baldwin County Martin Luther King was founded in 1986 and has been providing community service and celebrating Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday ever since.
